Code Of Ethics

The NZRIS is committed to ensuring quality, best practices and professionalism from its members. All members shall abide by the NZRIS Code of Ethics, and any violation to the Code may lead to the cancellation of membership.

The 5 Governing Principles of the Code of Ethics are:

Impartiality
Interpreters and Translators shall never counsel, advise or interject personal opinions their assignment. Interpreters and Translators shall not allow personal interests and beliefs to influence the assignments. Interpreters and Translatators shall remove themselves if an assignment is influenced by a lack of impartiality.

Confidentiality
Interpreters and Translators shall treat as confidential any information gained through an assignment, including the fact of their having undertaking as assignment.

Accuracy
Interpreters and Translatiors will, to the best of their ability interpret or translate the meaning of the message in the manner in which it was intended without adding or omitting information.

Professional Development

Interpreters and Translators shall continue to further theirs knowledge and skills attending professional development or training activities, maintaining good working relations with colleagues, and keeping abreast of current literature and practice in the field.

Competence

Interpreters and Translators shall only undertake work which they are competent to perform in the language areas for which they are "accredited" or "recognised".
Acceptance of an assignment is a declaration of one´s competence and constitutes a contract. If during an assignment it becomes clear that the work is beyoned the interpreter´s or translator´s capabilities, they should inform the client immediatly and withdraw.
